Matron grows vegetables and fruit in a Hampshire garden. I've been growing veggies since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Some traditional varieties and old favourites as well as new ideas. I share my garden with my allotment assistant Daisy the Labrador. On Twitter as @MatronsVeggies

A Day at the County Show
Surely one of the highlights of the Summer has to be the County Show! Wherever you are in the world there will be a Summer fete or County fair? This weekend was the Middlesex Show. Let me take you on a whistlestop tour of something quintessentially English...

The South of England Flyball association had some competitions too! For those that don't know, this is a sort of doggy relay race involving tennis balls!

Matron, with this spotted thing, you will have same problems, like you had with the tits :D By the way, why most of these "Women institute" ladies come to be so angry?...
ReplyDeleteSuperb, and you saved the best to last!
ReplyDeleteLooking at the second photograph, for a minute I thought they are saddling the dogs for round of good race,.. but they are not using assigned lanes!!... ~ cheers, Bangchik
ReplyDeleteI had hamsters as a kid! Highly under rated animals, they are. *grin*
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great show, thanks for sharing. I was going to make spotted dick once after seeing Jamie make one. Interesting name for sure!
ReplyDeleteHamster show?! LOL! That is priceless!
ReplyDeleteOur county fair is nothing nearly as entertaining as this. Far too commercial to be fun anymore.
Thanks for the walk about tour. Great fun!
What a grand day out! And how exciting to ride over home in a helecopter :-)
ReplyDeleteNow, you'll have people doing google searches for that pudding recipe - Ooooh Matron!!!!

Our local village show is on July 11th - not quite on this scale, and you could fly over the village in seconds and miss it! Still, England in summer is wonderful if a little bizarre at times.
ReplyDeleteCounty fairs are the best! I can't wait to check out our fair in October. I went last year for the first time and had a blast!
ReplyDeleteWow. Trip down memory lane: Spotted Dick was inevitably and straightforwardly rechristened 'Dead Man's Dick' at my school.
ReplyDeleteThis reminded me of the other dessert staple, a bland sponge log topped with dayglo-red jam and dessicated coconut shavings. Known to all as 'toenail pudding'.
I love county fairs and agricultural shows - our local one is next weekend and I'm really looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteOh lordy, what an amazing fete. We just don't seem to do things like that in Northern Ireland. I am unbelievably jealous. And wow, a tent full of hamsters - joy!!! You are so lucky!!!
