The Last Tomato

I couldn't put it off any longer! the very last of my greenhouse tomatoes have been ripening slowly. We have had such a mild Autumn that I have been reluctant to pick these last few. But that time has come.
Any day now we will get our first frost, so the last tomatoes have now been picked and eaten. There is nothing at all in the world like your own home grown tomatoes. For the next 6 months it is horrid, bland, tasteless watery supermarket tomatoes. I'd rather not!

Had you thought of growing storing varieties like this one: http://www.brownenvelopeseeds.com/tomatoes/de-colgar/ ? I don't know how well it would work, but they can't be worse than supermarket toms!

Yes, it's a sad day when the tomatoes are gone. When the first heavy frost hit here, the cherry tomatoes fell to the ground, not able to hold on. Then I found, they had rolled or nestled into the straw naturally. When the dog and I go to the garden, we both dig around seeing if we can get a few still in descent shape. A very cold, almost icy little Mexico Midget, now there's autumn joy.

Hello Matron...always sad when it comes time to pick the last homegrown tomato. I must try growing a tomato on my patio next year. Even salad tomatoes would be nice!

Robert - that sounds really interesting. I might just give that a go - but I wonder if in Spain they would be able to give them better conditions for storage. Definitley worth a go.

Hi Matron, I can't eat supermarket Tomatoes, they don't even taste like Tomatoes. I got some really early Tomatoes plants growing so they finished cropping early in the summer so I cut them down leaving one side shoot to grow from the bottom and now this side shoot is just starting to produce some ripe fruit. These two plants are both growing indoors though so won't get frosted.

Hi Matron
I am trying to keep mine going till Christmas, but like you say, one night of heavy frost and that's it.
It seems it has been a longer season for everyone this year.

The last tomato signals the time to rest, and let vegetable garden heal for more activities the next season!
