Vive La France!

I travelled to Calais this week to do a little bit of supermarket shopping before the Christmas rush. Their selection of supermarket veggies is just stunning when you compare it to the tasteless rubbish we put up with in the UK. Just look at these lovely leeks, just as nature intended. All we can get in supermarkets are long white sticks sealed up in sweaty plastic bags!
And these globe artichokes just looked and felt so fresh and full of life that I bought a couple home to eat. Matron just steamed them and ate them with nothing on......
And which high street supermarket in the UK could boast such a display of properly ripe tomatoes? none!
And the most famous of of French 'institutions vegetale' the Pot au Feu. A big bag of seasonal veggies to make the basis of all soups, stocks and stews. C'est Fantastique!

Who cares that it's nearly Winter. Just looking at those tomatoes makes me want to run into the kitchen and slice them onto a plate with some basil and manchego cheese topped off with pepper and balsamic. mmmmmmmm

My village shop now packs its fruit in plastic bags - as you say we end up with sweaty produce. Those toms remind me of First Born I grew a few years ago.

I just went to a product market today (I'll post photos soon), and they do look so much better than store bought. Although a lot of ours is left unwrapped in the grocery store, but I don't like the spray of water that comes down on it.
I like the bag of Pot au Feu, looks like a lot of the things I bought today! By the way I just popped over from Bliss. I wanted to see how the veggie garden had done on your side of the ocean.

I so agree! Being in France again this past Septmeber I got a few odd looks from the locals when I started to take lots of photos of fruit and veg in the supermarket, haha - glorious! The French have great attitude and love for their locally grown food.
Vive la revolution!

OMG, those tomatoes are GORGEOUS. And I love the idea of Pot au Feu. I visited the farmer's market in Nice, France last year and couldn't stop photographing the produce. It was my favorite part of my trip.
