While you are all contemplating on which veggie photos to send for my Christmas Veggie Blog, Matron had a short trip away on the island of Madeira. Have you ever wondered how
'Dragon Fruit' grow? I had seen them in supermarkets but had no idea they grew on the side of a cactus!

I remember
Prickly Pears from holidays in Portugal as a child. These lovely fruit are sweet and tasty once you have handled them with kid gloves!
Coffee Beans? I have a few small coffee plants on windowsills at home, I doubt they will produce fruit but I will give it a go.

The capital of Madeira is Funchal - which is named from the word 'Funcho' which is the Portugese name for
Fennel. This grows everywhere on the island.

I was interested to see that these
Tromba D'Albegna Squash are cut and eaten like courgettes, very small. Last year I grew these Trombone squash and left them till they were 2 or 3 feet long like butternut squash. Versatile.
Pomegranate bushes are nothing special to look like, but the red flowers and fruit are spectacular to look at.

Did you know that
Avocados also come in pink? I didn't!

And while in the tropical gardens in Funchal, I came across a
Macademia Nut Tree! An enormous evergreen tree like a laurel. I had no idea how they grew. Now I know!

Al picturesque and yummy. Yes, some avocados ripen pink or purple!
Hopefully your coffee trees will at least blooms because the scent is heavenly-people here grow them in the gardens for the scent alone.
Actually the Portuguese name for fennel is funcho, not funchal...but you were close ;)
I've decided what to send you for the christmas veggie blog...I just need to photograph it ...
Great photos of all the edibles...no I didn't know that Avocados came in pink...how delightful! I also had no idea that Macadamia Nuts grow on huge trees similar to a Laurel...so happy you passed on the information!
I remember having a pomegranate tree growing in the garden of a house we rented in France once - unfortunately the fruits hadn't ripened when we were there. There was also a persimmon tree. The owner said he didn't pick the fruits but the blackbirds loved them
Hi matron, you snuck off again!Great photos and very informative as usual
gintoino - comments and suggestions always welcomed. Now corrected, thank you. xx
Madeira is an amazing place, I went hillwalking in Sept and was amazed at all the crops growing along steep cliffs, really fantastic. I tried to get your email to no avail as I have a photo for the Dec post. I'll try again later as sometimes blogger acts up.
Why I garden - email address is on my profile page. Please try again, would love your entry.
Wow, there wasn't a single thing in that post that I knew before! :D Those prickly pears are huge! I'd love to go to Madeira, it looks a really interesting (and tasty!) place.
And actually, not meaning to be picky at all, but reading gintoino's comment 'Actually the Portuguese name for fennel is funcho, not funchal' - Matron's original post says 'The capital of Madeira is Funchal - which is named from the word 'Funcho' which is the Portugese name for Fennel.'
So no correction necessary :)
Personally, I don't know a single word of Portuguese so am in no position to comment otherwise!!
Great post, Matron, thanks!
I did change the wording slightly following gintoino's comments. Always welcome comments and corrections!
Lovely informative photo's, and I didn't know Avacodo's grew in Pink..do they taste the same?
