New Beginnings

Just a few hours of sunshine and my broad beans 'Aquadulce Claudia' are up an looking forward to the Summer.
But what on earth this big bumblebee is doing out in January beats me! I think he lives underneath the brickwork at the front of the house which is South facing. Whenever the sun comes out he warms up and goes for a test flight!
So in between sunshine and showers this week a complete rainbow appeared over the bottom of the garden! I wonder if there is a pot of gold there waiting for me? The rainbow just comes down over my rhubarb!

Gorgeous rainbow!

Even the bees think the weather is strange.

Your seedlings look great. Happy Sunday to you!

I've only just found your blog and am enjoying it so much! I've never planted broad beans. How do you prepare them to eat? In soups or just heated? Thank you!

Anonymous - you just pop them out of their pods and boil for just a few minutes. Eat as a green vegetable.

Bees just can't resist strawberry tree flowers - we see them in our garden at strange times of the year, but always on those flowers.

Good to see your broad beans are up. I grow Superaquadulce Claudia, which have a slightly better germination rate in my colder soil. It'll be a few weeks before I start mine, but it's something to look forward to!

It's always so funny to see just how different climates influence our vegetable growing...my broad beans are growing outside since November. Acuadulce never really work for me...I now grow a local traditional variety

What a joy to see a bee at this time of year!

Your broad beans look so happy. Can you smell spring when you touch them?

Wow, your ahead of the game with the broad beans. I'm gonna wait until end of Feb to think about sowing. The rainbow is great photo. Amazing to see the bumblebee in Jan, hope he is ready for the big chill that is supposed to be on its way.

He's a she!!
She's likely to be building herself up with a quick shot of nectar due to mild weather waking her a bit too early. Good on you for giving her a welcome winter nip!
