I'm struggling with RED WHITE and BLUE fruit and veggie ideas. Can anyone suggest some?
Matron grows vegetables and fruit in a Hampshire garden. I've been growing veggies since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Some traditional varieties and old favourites as well as new ideas. I share my garden with my allotment assistant Daisy the Labrador. On Twitter as @MatronsVeggies

Getting Patriotic!
Bloggers may remember last year I planted 'black' veggies as a living reminder of my lovely dog Buddy. Well, Matron has had an idea for veggie planting in 2012. I'm trying to think of veggies that are RED WHITE and BLUE to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
RED? well that's easy.. there are lots of those on the allotment.
WHITE? Well that might be a bit difficult
but I can think of a couple of veggies that might pass for white.
But BLUE? How many blue veggies can you think of? This is a heritage variety Kent Blue pea which was given to me by Sue last year.

blueberries
ReplyDeleteCauliflower and blueberries come to mind.
ReplyDeleteThere are some sort of beans that are considered white.
There is a blue potato, not sure the name off hand.
There is a white corn. I think Silver King and Silver Queen.
I think they are heritage varieties, also.
Bean sprouts could be your white veggie, as could onions.
Garlic could be your white veggie, too. ;o)
That's about it from me. Good luck!
have you tried a french bean called Blue lake the beans are a bluey green i am growing them this year.
ReplyDeletegreat idea might try this with my children.

My thoughts for white was cauliflower and garlic too but there are also white flowered runner and French beans and today I planted some white onions. We've also grown a white beetroot called Blankoma. There's celery too.
ReplyDeleteThere's a red potato called Highland Burgandy Red and a blue potato - Salad Blue? - We've also grown some purple cauliflowers that turned blue after cooking - not very appetising to look at. Blueberries as mentioned already.
Alan Romans actually has a red white and blue potato collection.
I grew a blue potato last year, blue outside and in. It's called Peru Purple. It makes very interesting bright blue mash :-)
ReplyDeleteLove how you gardeners know your veggies and their colors...you'll have your red, white and blue to honor Queen Elizabeth II in no time!
ReplyDeleteI'd opt for:
ReplyDeleteRed - strawberries (got to be!)
White - mini turnips
Blue - Congo potatoes (well, they're a bit purple really, but poetic licence!)
Salad Blue potatoes! And they're a heritage variety as well, so you'd be being patriotic and historical at the same time!
ReplyDeleteHow about some chard with big white stalks?
ReplyDeletealternating withe red stalked variety and some blue-green kale would look almost union jack like!

Have a look at the lists here Matron:

Try the new white strawberry. Red you already have, tomatoes and as for blue try blueberries. That would give you red, white and blue fruits. Then you could do veg too. Red, white and blue potatoes. I'm sure there are loads more.
ReplyDeleteI grow a really good cucumber every year that is called 'long white', although it really isn't very long - it has a lovely lemony flavour.
ReplyDeleteI would grow blauhilde climbing french beans, they are quite prolific and I grow mine up a rose arch because the flowers are a lovely mauvey blue and they are so pretty.
I think there is an Edzell Blue spud. There's a Kew Blue bean from the HSL although actually they're a delicious deep purple.
ReplyDeleteThere are white carrots too
Good luck
