This early
PSB 'Rudolph' is just starting to produce. This same variety last year was more than a month earlier than it is this year. Perhaps the extended cold snap here has set it back a few weeks.
I remember you saying about the 'Rudolf' last year, Matron - can I ask when you sowed the seed? As you say, anything coming up with the goods at this time of year is to be welcomed!
ReplyDeleteWe sowed the same variety last year and were picking small florets like the one you've pictured back in late November. We cooked a few but then left them to regenerate. They're now starting to sprout again - like yours. It's snowing here again now so goodness knows what havoc the weather's playing on the garden!

ReplyDeleteI like the broccoli leaves even better than the heads... even if the flowers don't come you can eat them!
ReplyDeleteIt is great to know the frozen conditions of the past few weeks just slowed it down not killed it off completely!
ReplyDeleteOhh that looks so yummy! I have the same broccoli growing on my allotment, but the last time I looked (weeks ago) it looked sad and got at by this weather. I intend to pop up there for a quick look today to see how it's doing. If it looks like yours I will be over the moon.
ReplyDeleteArrggghhhhhs of frustration here!!! I was going to do a post about purple sprouting broccoli - is it worth it? And there you go and show how fabulous yours is doing. Ours is feeble in comparision (don't tell the hubby I said that) and only starting to show tiny signs of purple and/or sprouts.

It's great to be getting crops at this time of year. I'm going to have a go at growing some psb this year.
ReplyDeleteThe super early crops not only feed the body - the sight of new growth in the dark cold days of winter and very early spring really feeds the spirit too. The green and purple on your purple sprouting broccoli is like a spring tonic!
