Buried Treasure
It was on February 17th that I planted one first early seed potato 'Rocket' in a pot in a heated propagator in the greenhouse.
It was potted on several times and put on an amazing growth spurt. In the last week it looks as if the leaves were starting to fade, and yesterday I decided to see if my experiment had worked.
So I tipped out the pot, to see what just 11 weeks of Spring growth had done for me.
I dug deeper into the potting compost and more buried treasure began to emerge. I was only expecting a few golf balls for a bit of an early treat.
But I had 7 lovely new potatoes for lunch.
So I cooked them, and ate them with nothing on ;-) (the potatoes - not me!) Delicious!

That's fantastic, Matron! What did you use for potting mix for the potato plant?
You re-potted 3 times? Or just as you felt it needed more room?

So what was secret to this success then? And is "rocket" the name of the variety?
LindaG - just ordinary multipurpose potting compost. I repotted it when it looked like it needed it, about 3 times.
Jason - yes, Rocket is the variety.
Wow, they look scrumptious, i've planted rocket in some tubs in my back yard, I hope they turn out as good as yours,
I have 3 Arran Pilot in a tub in the greenhouse that I suspect are ready for noshing too. Expecting daughter and husband for a meal in a week's time to celebrate their wedding aniversary so I intend to do the tipping out trick then.
Wow, I'm impressed! What a great crop to be getting so early. Earlies (and 2nd earlies) are my favourite variety of potato - Less trouble with blight, fantastic flavour and expensive in the shops.
Mmmmmm you say you ate them all now Matron - Is that true, cos I can be over in Hillingdon in a snap if there are any leftovers YUM YUM YUM LOL :o)
Can't wait for mine - one of the old guys at the allotment reckons I'm going to have the first new potatoesn site! Not bad for a first timer - or is that beginners luck? Either way its all good.
That's encouraging as our potatoes in bags have loads of foliage and we were concerned that they may be all top and not potatoes.

What a great idea I must try that for my little grand-children as I am trying to show them that not everything comes packaged and in cans originally. I have sown beans with them in their garden and tomatoes and strawberries, so your potato idea would be great.
Lovely mess of new potatoes - just the thing when the storage potatoes are getting a bit peaked and the main garden bed potatoes are many weeks in the future yet. Well done!

I wonted to put my handfull of potatoes on my blogspot but after seeing yours I was ashamed and I live a way down futher south.
